A widget is a self-contained block of functionality embedded into a page. A plugin, app or extension is software installed into a platform that adds functionality to it.
The same product is often called all four, depending on which platform you bought it from.
What it looks like in practice
Our reviews product is a widget on Wix, a plugin on WordPress, an app on Shopify and an extension on Magento. It is the same thing — one script that renders reviews.
Why it matters
The naming causes real confusion when people search. Someone looking for a “Shopify reviews app” and someone looking for a “WordPress reviews plugin” want the same capability and will not recognise each other’s vocabulary. It is also why an embed and an app install often produce identical results.
