Review widget, review platform or reputation management?
The short answer
Three different categories: review widgets display reviews you already have, review platforms collect and host reviews for you, and reputation management software monitors and routes reviews across many locations.
They differ by an order of magnitude in price, and buyers routinely evaluate one while needing another.
The three categories
| Category | Does | Typical price | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Review widget | Displays reviews you already have, from platforms you already use | Low, often free at entry | This, Elfsight, EmbedSocial, Trustindex |
| Review platform | Collects, hosts and verifies reviews; syndicates them | Mid | Trustpilot, Feefo, Reviews.io, Judge.me |
| Reputation management | Monitors mentions, collects reviews, routes replies across locations | High | Birdeye, Podium, Reputation.com |
How to tell which you need
Count your locations and count your problems. One location, reviews exist but nobody sees them: a widget. One location, no reviews yet: a collection tool or a platform. Many locations, replies to coordinate, mentions to monitor: reputation management, and the price follows.
What most people get wrong
Buying reputation management for a single-location business because it appeared in a comparison of review tools. The features are real and mostly aimed at problems a one-location business does not have — multi-location dashboards, team permissions, reply workflows.
The opposite error is buying a widget when the actual problem is having eleven reviews. No display tool fixes that.
Where we sit
A widget, with review collection attached. Not a reputation platform, and we will say so on a sales call. If you need multi-location monitoring, Birdeye and Podium are built for it and we are not.
